Dentists Treating Gum Disease

Dentistry has come a long way over the years. In the past, if there was a deep cavity, your tooth might have been pulled. Now with preventative screenings and oral care, dentists can perform a simple filling or a root canal when necessary. Teeth can be saved! This progress makes the art and science of dental care extremely rewarding for dentists. As a dentist, saving teeth, is essentially saving lives. We are giving our patients confidence to go out into this world, preventing terrible infections and diseases, and ultimately giving our patients the ability to eat, smile and enjoy their lives.

At Perio Protect, our current career battle is dealing with gingivitis and gum disease. With over 47% of Americans diagnosed with gum disease and tens of millions more diagnosed with gingivitis, it’s an important topic that needs to be discussed. If regular dental cleanings and tooth brushing worked well, one in two American adults would not have gum disease. We are dedicated to doing better.

What is Perio Protect?

The benefits of scaling and root planing are well known. It has been the most conventional periodontal therapy to date. This type of deep cleaning is necessary when dentists can get to the “root” of the problem, no pun intended. However, the disease doesn’t go away and the symptoms regularly return, so dentists look for supplemental treatments to help patients. Perio Protect is a different complementary approach to gum disease with at home treatment between office visits. Using the Perio Tray®, patients can deliver medication between their teeth and gums, decreasing the bacteria infecting the area.

How Does it Work?

One of the hardest parts of being a dentist is actually getting a patient to treat the problem. Patients often overlook dental care as an “extra” measure instead of a necessity to their health. The Perio Tray® is a convenient way to give your patients that extra care, all in the comfort of their own home. The Perio Tray® has an internal seal that prevents medication from leaking all over the mouth and directs is deep below the gums. Dentists prescribe the Perio Tray and patients use it home, putting the medication directly in the tray and wearing it for just 10-15 minutes each day. The medication will be held deep where it is needed, for longer than is possible with any other non-invasive gum disease treatment. Ultimately, it is an extremely easy way to help our patients help themselves.
