Direct Medication Delivery System Offers Relief for Patients with Peri-Implant Disease

Periodontal disease presents an ongoing problem for patients of every dental practice, but the challenge of disease management increases exponentially when dental implants are involved. Perimucositis and peri-implantitis are common complications following implant placement. Both are characterized by a host inflammatory response to bacterial plaque, or biofilm, that affects the supporting hard and soft tissues surrounding an implant. Patients at greatest risk for implant failure and bone loss, the most severe symptoms of peri-implantitis, often have a history of periodontitis, which shares an etiology with peri-implant diseases in biofilm. Systemic conditions that affect healing have also been known to increase the chances and severity of peri-implant disease—given that numerous illnesses of this kind have been linked to oral bacteria and gum disease, it’s clear that biofilm can set in motion a dangerous cycle that threatens not only oral health, but whole-body health as well.

An Innovative Solution to a Growing Problem

With nearly 50% of adults experiencing chronic periodontitis, and implants becoming a more prevalent treatment option for partially or totally edentulous patients, it’s apparent that an effective means of managing biofilm is needed. Traditionally, mechanical methods like scaling and root planing (SRP) and surgery have comprised the standard for treating periodontal and peri-implant

diseases. Unfortunately, these approaches fail to fully address the problem of subgingival bacteria, and, in some cases, may even encourage biofilm regeneration or introduce pathogens, toxins, and other host inflammatory products into the bloodstream. Likewise, while flossing is typically considered a first-line defense against plaque and gum disease, some data suggests that this home hygiene staple is incompatible with implant care: researchers found that the exposed, rough surfaces of implants can shred floss, leaving fiber remnants that promote plaque development, peri-implant inflammation, and, subsequently, bone loss. One innovative treatment, however, offers hope for implant patients seeking relief from disease symptoms and a more convenient way to manage biofilm between dental visits.

Home Implant Care with Perio Protect: Safe, Simple, Effective.

Direct medication delivery via the Perio Protect® Method provides patients with an effective, easy-to-use, and non-invasive treatment for gum and peri-implant disease. Designed to complement both conventional at-home and professional care, the Perio Protect Method leverages prescription Perio Tray™ therapy to administer 1.7% hydrogen peroxide gel, a proven antibacterial agent, into gingival pockets as deep as 9mm. Unlike flossing, Rx Perio Trays reliably and safely remove biofilm on and around dental implants—with Perio Protect, the combination of peroxide and sealed tray delivery grants prompt relief from inflammation and other symptoms while creating an oxygen-rich environment that discourages bacterial growth and supports host healing. Clinicians will also be happy to hear that the system encourages treatment adherence: on average, patients can expect to see results after just 15 minutes of daily use for several weeks, and a custom-fit tray design ensures comfort and no disruption to normal routine. As an added benefit, when used before SRP or surgery, Perio Protect reportedly aids with calculus removal and minimizes bacteremia risk in susceptible patients.

Clinically Proven, Patient Approved

Over the years, the Perio Protect Method has been validated by countless dentists and their patients, as well as extensive clinical evaluation. Studies such as this one have demonstrated the efficacy of direct medication delivery using custom-formed Perio Trays to treat periodontitis, perimucositis, and peri-implantitis. In each case included, researchers found that Perio Protect helped significantly decrease the number and virulence of bacteria, in turn, improving tissue responses and reducing pocket depth and bleeding upon probing. Moreover, in a case in which a patient was suffering bone loss due to peri-implant disease, radiographs after treatment with Perio Tray delivery reveal implant threads supported by an increased amount of bone. Like many patients whose long-term maintenance program includes Perio Tray treatment, subsequent examination showed implant stability years later and no signs of peri-implant disease.
